Vitamin D is not really a vitamin, despite of its name. It is a very powerful neuroregulatory steroidal hormone, which is responsible for a number of health benefits.
According to the researchers, the best way to optimize the levels of this vitamin in your body, is to get an appropriate sun exposure. During winter, you should use UVB light, because it is scientifically proven that UV rays also offer numerous health benefits. And finally, you can ingest this vitamin through your diet.

However, you need to choose D3 instead of D2, because in the long run it will do more harm to the body than good.
Doctors often prescribe Drisdol, which is a synthetic form of D2 vitamin, and it is far from D3, which is the type of vitamin that the human body produces when exposed to the sun.
A study was conducted, in order to see the differences between the two vitamin D variations, and the participants were divided into two groups. There were big differences between the two groups.
- The group that used D2 had an increased risk of death by 2%
- The group that used D3 had a decreased risk of death by 6%
This is a strong indicator of the importance of vitamin D, when it comes to the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Researchers are also adamant that vitamin D is very efficient in preventing different forms of cancer like breast, ovarian, skin, pancreatic and prostate cancers.
The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found out that a serum 25(OH)D, can lead to 50% lower risk of colorectal cancer. They published that in their study in 2007.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted a study that lasted for four years. They found out that the women who received 1,450mg of calcium and 1,100 IU of vitamin D every day, had a cancer survival rate of 77 percent.
