Fruit flies can be quite a nuisance and they can appear virtually everywhere. They can be found on places where the food is left to rot or ferment.
They are also attracted by drains, mops, cleaning rags, trash containers, empty cans and bottles and garbage disposals.
They are very annoying and they also reduce the life of the foods and plants that they prey on. The first thing that most people decide to do, is go to the store to buy insecticide. Insecticides can damage your health because they are very toxic. Luckily for you, there is a much safer way to deal with these flies, using only natural ingredients.
Today, we are going to talk about five home remedies that can trap the fruit flies and gnats. You will need a cup or a glass jar and a plastic wrap in order to make this trap.
Preparing the trap
To prepare the trap, you will need to fill the container (the plastic cup or the jar) with the solution (we will talk about the solutions later) and then tightly cover it with the plastic wrap. Then poke the plastic wrap multiple times. This will leave space for the flies to go inside the trap.
Solutions for the trap
- Apple cider vinegar
ACV is an ingredient that probably most of you have in your kitchen cabinets. To prepare the ACV, heat ½ a cup of it and then pour a couple of drops of liquid soap inside. Stir the mixture well and then add it in the jar. Place the jar in a place where the flies and gnats appear the most and they will be attracted by the smell of the apple cider vinegar. Once they get inside the jar, they will be killed by the liquid soap.
- Red wine
Red wine can be used as a bait to catch the gnats and flies, because they are attracted by the smell. Put half a cup of red wine in the jar and add half a cup of water. As they enter, they will drown themselves in the wine and water.
- Rotten food
These flies can also be attracted by the smell and taste of their favorite food. Any rotten vegetable or fruit will do. Place the fruit/vegetable in the jar and wait. When they come in the jar, pour water in it to drown them.
- Pepper, sugar and milk
This is an option for those people who simply do not have time to prepare the trap. Just heat 2 cups of milk and add 4 tbsp. of ground pepper and 8 tbsp. of sugar. Then simmer this mixture for 10 minutes and pour it into a shallow dish. Place the dish in the area that you consider to be problematic. The flies will immediately notice the smell of the milk and they will drown in it.
- Lemon scented sprays
Another way to deter the fruit flies is by using strong lemon scent. You will need to fill 2 cups with hot water and add about 15 drops of lemongrass oil. You can then add this mixture into a spray bottle. You can spray this mixture on the places that these bugs appear, like the surface of your kitchen.
Apart from these solutions, you will need to thoroughly clean your home from these bugs. It usually takes 7 days to completely eliminate them.
