Researchers at the University of Chicago stated that sleep deprivation increases the risk of obesity and diabetes. They conducted a study which involved 20 men. The lack of sleep affects your metabolism and your blood sugar levels and this study proved that. The tests showed that men who slept less than 5 hours had 30% higher fatty acids in their blood compared to men who slept for 8 hours every night. These type of results may lead to pre-diabetes condition.
In order to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on the heart health, there was a study which involved 657 Russian men, at the age of 25 and 64. Their sleep-and-wake cycle was followed for 14 years. The group with men who lacked sleep were twice as likely to experience myocardial infarction.
Shockingly enough, a study has shown that poor sleep increases the risk of suicide in people who are diagnosed with depression. The study was led for 10 years and it was concluded that 20 participants of 420 who struggled with insomnia, ended up committing suicide.
