Aspirin is a common medication. Most of us have used aspirin at least a few times at some period in our lives.
But, have you ever thought about the effectiveness of this pill? For that purpose, the team at How Stuff Works have recently uploaded a YouTube video in order to explain the science-based health benefits of aspirin.
Aspirin belongs to a category of fairly new medical marvel, but the drug itself is derived from the willow plant. You probably didn’t know, but willow plants have been used as natural remedies to treat pain for at least the past 6,000 years. Scientists worked on analyzing the active ingredient in willow, salicin, and focused on extracting and purifying this ingredient. Salicin became the aspirin that we know today.
How does aspirin work to reduce the pain in our body? In our digestive tract, salicin is broken into salicylic acid, which has the ability to reduce pain and inflammation. German scientists synthesized this on large scale, but it was too hard and could cause harmful side effects for the stomach lining, causing severe irritation. Then, aspirin was created and was categorized as a less acidic version of synthetic salicylic acid.
Pain is necessary because that’s our body’s reaction to warn us of any health problem. But, when the pain is persistent and unbearable, we must do something to reduce the pain, once the danger of the injury has passed. Additionally, certain pains are not a result of injury and are unavoidable, such as menstrual cramps or certain types of headaches.
To be precise, aspirin latches onto molecules which carry the pain sensations to the brain and alerts it to the injury. Then, the brain registers less pain. It soothes the pain by blocking inflammation, so there is less of an inflammatory response.
