Coconut oil is amazing, but only if you buy the right kind: here’s what to look for

Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils on the planet and it offers countless health benefits.

The medicinal properties of the coconut oil have been confirmed in over 1500 different studies, and the reason why it is so healthy is mainly due to its unique content.

It contains medium-chain fatty acids, which have capric acid, caprylic acid and lauric acid. These acids are very healthy because around 91% of the fat is healthy saturated fat.

Medium-chain fatty acids are better than long-chain fatty acids, because they have antifungal and antimicrobial properties, they are easily digested and they are not stored as fats but they are converted as energy.

Coconut oil alleviates inflammation, prevents hypertension and heart disease, helps with weight loss, strengthens the immune system, protects the liver, treats Alzheimer’s disease and it even treats cancer. It is also an excellent natural beauty product and it can be used for itch relief, as a body oil, makeup removal oil, lice remedy, breath freshener, stretch mark cream, night cream, massage oil, deodorant, dandruff treatment, under eye cream and lip balm.

It is important that you know, that in order to reap the benefits of the coconut oil, you must choose the right type. There are two major types of coconut oil: refined and virgin.

Virgin coconut oil

Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh, non-GMO coconuts. This oil can be heated up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and it has the original coconut flavor. In the process of preparing, the workers scoop it out of the shell, and then they cold press it. Finally, the oil is the final product.

Refined coconut oil

The refined coconut oil is made from dried coconut milk. This oil can be heated up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and it has neutral flavor. In order to obtain the neutral flavor, it is being steam refined in the preparation process.

You can use any of these oils, because they have their own nutritional values. Both of them contain 50% lauric acid and 63% medium-chain fats.

When you buy coconut oil, make sure that you choose oil that is organic and non-GMO. It is also important to look for a steam refined coconut oil (if you want to buy refined coconut oil), because it is free of chemicals.

The virgin coconut oil on the other hand, should never be deodorized or bleached.
