Cabbage is a healthy and incredibly versatile vegetable, that belongs to the Brassica family. It can be round or oval in shape, with soft white and light green leaves.

It contains tons of health benefits, because of the fact that is packed with antioxidants and it is excellent for the skin. What is more, it contains tons of iron, vitamins, and potassium, which makes it a very common part of the Eastern and Western cuisines. It will detoxify your liver and blood, eliminate blemishes and treat arthritis.

Consuming cabbage will rejuvenate your skin, and if you apply it topically, it will heal skin irritations, wounds, eczema, psoriasis, leg ulcers, rashes, and pimples.

Also, cabbages are high in vitamins A and D, which support the health of your skin, and they protect it against UV rays.

There are several types of cabbages:

  1. Green cabbage

This is the most common type of cabbage and it is full of vitamins and nutrients, that can be added to salads side dishes and various meals.

  1. Red cabbage

The purple or red cabbage is much denser than the green cabbage and it has a much more peppery flavor. It is also high in nutrients, and in fact, contains more nutrients than the green cabbage.

  1. Savoy cabbage

This cabbage has bigger and darker leaves, and it is mostly light or pale green. The leaves of this cabbage are suitable for wrapping of different fillings.

  1. Wombok or Bok Choy

This one is called a Chinese cabbage and it is a paler green, and it has an oval shape and the leaves are with white veins.

Cabbages are great as an ingredient, for recipes that can treat joint pain, so here is how to prepare a cabbage compress:


  • Cabbage (red cabbage is the best)
  • Aluminum foil
  • A gauze or a bandage

How to prepare it:

You need to take the outer leaf of the cabbage, then wash it well, dry it and remove the hard stem. Then, take a rolling pin and roll it over the leaves in order to release the juice. Wrap it in a foil and then put it in the oven for a couple of minutes, just to warm it up, and apply it on the affected area. Then, secure it with a gauze or a bandage. After about 60 minutes, remove it. You will need to repeat the procedure two or three times a day.

You can also do cold compresses, and in order to do that, you need to keep the leaves in your fridge.
