Amanda Bernier – a Connecticut firefighter was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) about two weeks after she found out that she was pregnant.
She did not lose hope however, and later stunned the world when she gave birth to a healthy and beautiful baby girl Arabella Grace.
Amanda, 31-years-old, is unable to speak and is completely paralyzed. Against all odds, she was able to breastfeed her baby daughter. She uploaded a photo of her breastfeeding her baby girl on her Facebook page that is run by her husband Chris Bernier.
She said that nobody knew if she would be able to breastfeed, because the doctors could not find any case studies that suggested that she would. But just like she knew that she would deliver a healthy baby, she also knew that she would be able to breastfeed as well.
Both her grandmother and her mother suffered from this disease and died. This tragic disease attacks the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain and create total muscular dystrophy in the entire body. Amanda needs help from her family to breastfeed her baby, because she is totally paralyzed.
She posted that the lactation nurse visited her daily. Both nurses told her that she was lucky for how well the baby latched on.
The baby is getting older and the mother is facing new challenges every day, but she is not the one to give up and she fights the problems even harder.
Amanda is unable to speak and she uses her eye movements to type and post her views on social media. She was very emotional when she shared that she was able to freeze as much milk as she could, so her daughter would still have breast milk when she is no longer there.
What keeps her going are the inspirational posts and her responses to other people’s questions. Even though she is fully paralyzed, and has a very difficult life, she could never imagine that she would be able to help so many people.
She shared a post in which he said that she did not imagine her life having ALS, and that it breaks her heart that she will not be able to be the mother that she always wanted to be. She is devastated by the fact that the little baby will not have her mother for much longer, and she would have to grow up without a mother. Everything happens for a reason she says, and she is glad that she can be by her side as her guardian angel.
What an inspirational mother!
