Allergy and Insomnia Drugs Linked to Dementia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder which affects many people worldwide.

The majority of people who struggle with insomnia decide to take sleeping pills to treat this problem. They believe that insomnia and allergy medications are perfectly safe since they have been approved by relevant regulatory authorities.

However, their use comes with serious side effects after all. Scientific research has shown that anticholinergic drugs are linked to dementia. The most commonly used drugs like Dramamine, Benadryl, Unisom and Advil PM. Demerol and Paxil have been linked with cognitive impairment.

This study wasn’t the first one which showed this result. The latest study published in the JAMA Neurology magazine associated anticholinergic drugs with brain deterioration. The scientists from the Indiana University used brain scans and analyzed the effect of these drugs on the brain.

To be more precise, they used PET and MRI scans and concluded that anticholinergic drugs affect the brain metabolism and cerebral blood flow, which leads to brain atrophy. Also, their memory tests results and memory performance were quite low.

A year ago, researchers from the University of Washington revealed that people who take specific anticholinergic drugs which treat insomnia are more likely to develop dementia. These findings need further analysis to determine whether the duration of using insomnia pills increases the risk of developing dementia.

Also, drugs like Atrovent and Spiriva which contain tiotropium can be very dangerous for your health. These drugs are used for treating asthma. Paxil is another drug which contains tiotropium, used for treating depression.
