9 American Foods That Are Banned in Other Countries

The fact that certain foods which are sold and served in the United States are banned in other countries is not surprising.

This matter is a cause for concern because they contain preservatives, flavorings, artificial coloring and other toxic elements. Here’s a list of 9 foods which are banned outside the United States.

Genetically engineered papaya

We already know that genetically modified foods damage your health. To be more precise, they cause the following health problems: intestinal damage, birth defects, tumors, and even death. The Hawaiian papaya is genetically modified and resistant to a ringspot virus. The countries in the European Union have already declared this food as unsafe for consumption.

Farm-raised salmon 

This type of fish is raised on unnatural diet which consists of grains and antibiotics. The flesh of this fish turns gray because they are given petrochemicals which are not fit for human consumption. New Zealand and Australia have already banned this food.

Flame retardant drinks 

Citrus-flavored sport drinks and sodas contain a synthetic chemical known as brominated vegetable oil. This chemical has a depressant effect on the central nervous system, so it is banned in Europe and Japan.

Ractopamine-tainted meat 

The drug ractopamine is used to increase the muscle mass in livestock animals, which results in producing more meat. While Americans freely consume this meat, the same has been proven as unfit for consumption in Europe, the Republic of China, and Russia.

Arsenic-laced chicken 

Animals in the United States are given with drugs which contain arsenic in order to boost their growth. It is also used for coloring the meat pink. According to FDA, these drugs are safe, but several studies have shown the opposite. They have shown that inorganic arsenic is a cancer-causing substance. The countries in the European Union banned this food.

Artifical colors 

The foods in the USA which contain harmful additives like colors, flavorings, and preservatives are banned in Austria and Norway. They cause severe health problems like behavioral problems, cancer, and birth defects.


This fat substitute is often used in the production of high-fat snacks. It can be found in potato chips and French fries. Olestra is a common ingredient in many products, but it can cause digestive problems like leaky bowels, cramps, and diarrhea. It is not allowed in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Baked goods which contain potassium bromate 

Several studies have linked potassium bromate with gastrointestinal disorders, nervous system damage, thyroid disorder, kidney failure, and cancer.  However, this chemical is still allowed in the United States but banned in the European counties, Canada, and China.

Milk and dairy laced which contain rBGH

rBGH is a synthetic version of natural bovine somatotropin. Cows are injected with this genetically engineered artificial hormone to increase their milk production. This dangerous hormone causes gene mutation and increases the risk of cancer in humans. Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, and Israel don’t allow the consumption of foods which contain rBGH.
