5 Amazing Tricks That Will Disinfect Your Pillows and Pillowcases and Restore Their Color

Keeping your pillows and sheets clean is necessary.

Cleaning them every month is very important for a good night’s sleep, but also for your overall health.

We use pillows constantly, so we should try to keep them in their perfect shape. But, many people are not aware of the sweat and dirt that build up in the pillows. Your pillows become a perfect ground for bacteria and fungi to grow and spread.

We all use protective pillow cases, but they also get dirty.

The following tricks are very useful as they will make your pillows and pillowcases perfectly clean.

Baking soda and vinegar 

Make a mixture of some vinegar and baking soda. Then, soak your pillows and pillow cases in this mixture. Baking soda and vinegar have antibacterial properties and act as natural whitening agents.


  • 80 grams of baking soda
  • 125 ml. of white vinegar

Put the mixture in your washing machine before you start the washing cycle. Then, put the pillows and pillowcases in the washing machine. After that, leave them to dry in sunlight.

Hot water and lemon 

Fresh lemon juice has natural disinfectant qualities.


  • 6 lemons
  • 2 liters of water.

First, boil the water. Then, squeeze the lemons. Add them to the water. Now, leave your pillows and pillow cases soak in this mixture for about 2 hours. Wash them in the washing machine as you usually do.

Baking soda and tea tree essential oil

These ingredients are effective bleach alternative. Baking soda and tea tree essential oil remove yellowish stains.


  • 80 gr. of baking soda
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil (you can use other essential oil of your choice)

Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Pour the mixture on your pillows. Leave it like that for 45 minutes. Then, use a brush to wipe it off. This trick will keep your pillows smelling fresh.

Borax detergent 

Every housewife needs this trick. This mixture makes your pillows look like new again. It also removes dirt and sweat from your pillows.


  • a cup of regular detergent
  • a cup of dishwashing soap (biodegradable)
  • a cup of Borax
  • a cup of hot water

First, put on gloves and a mask to prevent Borax intoxication. Put the ingredients one after another in the washing machine. Then, put the pillows in. Start the washing cycle. Leave them to dry in the sunlight.

Hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice 


  • one cup of lemon juice
  • one cup of hydrogen peroxide

First, add the ingredients in a cup of warm water. Then, leave your pillows soak in this mixture for about an hour. After that, wash them in the washing machine. Leave your pillows dry in sunlight.
