Water is essential for the survival of all living organisms. 60 percent of the human body is made of water, which means that every organ, tissue and cell is made from water.
It helps in digestion, keeping the skin healthy, keeping the normal temperature of the body, removal of toxins and it also lubricates the eyes and joints. There are many people that are unaware of the fact that they lose water every day and that they need to replenish the lost quantity of it. Burn victims, diabetics and sports people are more likely to experience dehydration than others.
It is important to understand and recognize the symptoms of dehydration. If you have some of these symptoms, it means that you need to increase the intake of water immediately.
Symptoms of dehydration:
The first symptom are the headaches. When you don’t drink water, there is less fluid in the brain than it should be. When the brain fluid is reduced, your brain will push on your skull, which will cause headache, and will make your brain more prone to numerous health issues.
- Foggy brain and lack of focus
Our brain is made of 90% water. This shows that when our body is dehydrated, it can slow the function of the brain, which in turn will cause cognitive problems and mood swings.
Mild dehydration will reduce the short term memory, perception, psychomotor skills, arithmetic abilities, tracking visual and motor, regardless of the age of the individual. Dehydration can also lead to anger, hyper-energy, exhaustion, mood changes and confusion.
- Heart problems
Water deficiency can damage our physical condition and our heart. If the body has less water than it requires, it can make our blood more viscous and it can reduce the volume of plasma. Lack of water can also impair the blood flow and the heart rate.
It can also cause imbalance of minerals in the body, which will lead to hypotension. Low levels of sugars and potassium can cause palpitation.
- Bad breath
This is another symptom that can occur as a result of dehydration. The human body will make less saliva, which is antibacterial. This means that the bacteria will grow more and more in our mouth and it will eventually lead to bad breath.
The saliva can protect our teeth from decay or cavities. It can create a protective layer that will clean our teeth from the remains of food between them.
- Digestion and constipation issues
When you ingest water, you ingest nutrients and it breaks down food. It also keeps the system flexible and clean, and it lubricates digestive organs. This means that you will have no problems with constipation. Lack of water can lead to indigestion and heart burn too.
- Food cravings
If you have a lot of food cravings, make sure that you drink water before you eat. When our body is water deficient, it is very difficult for organs like the liver to operate smoothly. These organs require glycogen, and water releases it from the energy reserves. This is the one of the reasons why you crave for food.
- Muscle and joint pain
The joint cartilages in our bodies are made from 80 percent water, which means that if you are dehydrated, the bones will grind with each other and it will eventually lead to pain. Low magnesium levels can also lead to muscle pain and cramps.
If you are experiencing loss of fluids, the volume of your blood will be reduced and it will lead to hypertension. The heart will expand more and it will require energy to send to the brain, muscles and skin the nutrients and oxygen that they need. When this happens, you will feel lethargic and tired.
- Dry skin and lips
The skin is the biggest organ in the human body, and it requires a lot of water to keep it elastic and hydrated. Water deficiency means that the person is sweating a lot less, which will inhibit the ability of the body to eliminate the toxins through the skin. Dehydration will lead to psoriasis, acne, dry and chapped lips and eczema.
- Dark urine
The kidneys are responsible to maintain the balance of the fluids in our body. When there is enough water in the body, the urine is clear to yellow. This means that our body has sufficient water to remove the toxins that are inside it.
But when the kidneys lack water, they cannot maintain good blood pressure, which in turn leads to dark urine. When the urine is dark, it is full of toxins.
